Maui For Dummies, Second Edition

Maui For Dummies, Second Edition

I am a regular visitor to Maui and I got this book cheap at a library book sale because I am always interested in anything to do with Hawaii. It was surprisingly informative and accurate. The author has even covered some ‘local’ restaurants (unlike other guide books) she’s now blurted to the world, but also missed a few, so some of my favorite finds are safe.
I liked the very detailed, personalized info on hotels etc: ‘the owner leaves notes in your room saying things like bang the top of the TV twice if the reception is bad’.
This is an author who clearly enjoyed her research. I gave her four out of five only because she spills the beans on my favorite hideaway restuarant. Now I’ll never get in!!!

California Rental Car Insurance

When someone rents a car, the automobile rental companies hold the renter accountable under the rental agreement for damage to their car. They offer a Damage Waiver at an extra cost. This Damage Waiver is not insurance, but a contractual agreement between the renter and rental company. If a waiver is not purchased, it is important to review your own automobile policy to determine if any extension of coverage applies. Also, establish how the liability coverage afforded by your policy applies in the event you are at fault in an accident with the rented vehicle. In California, you are required to have auto insurance regardless of whether you are driving your own car or if you are renting one.

Rental car agencies do provide wide range of auto insurance coverage and it would not be prudent to blindly select rental car insurance as every policy offers its individual advantages under particular situations. You should examine each policy so offered and judge it against the requirements you have. It would be prudent to discuss the policy with the car rental agent, rather than just read the summary over the website.

Sometimes you are not required to purchase any car rental insurance because you are already covered by your car insurance. Usually, your coverage does remain the same with a rented car as it would if you would be driving your own vehicle. Also, you could be covered by auto insurance coverage under your credit cards. You should check with your credit card company about the coverage to which you are entitled.

Before you rent a vehicle, check the financial and insurance obligation you will face, and find out how these would be covered by your own auto insurance. In case you do need to exercise your insurance policy and realize that certain aspect is not currently covered, you should check if it would be covered under other insurance policies.

Online Travel (Eu-Independent) Feature

Online Travel (Eu-Independent) Overview

Where are the best travel deals on line? How can you traverse the fine print of travel industry rules and restrictions to your advantage? Where can you get the most reliable advice? No mere Yellow Pages of travel-related Web sites, ONLINE TRAVEL focuses on helping do-it-yourself travel planners thoroughly understand and exploit their best options on line. Written by syndicated national columnist and travel expert Ed Perkins, ONLINE TRAVEL takes readers inside the travel industry before unloosing them on the Internet. A winner of the Traveler’s Advocate Award from the American Society of Travel Agents, Perkins decodes much of the arcana of industry terminology and practices, arming consumers with the whats, whys, and how-to’s for getting the best deals-and avoiding mistakes. He guides the online travel buyer through recommended resources-everything from sites for individual airlines and hotels to independent booking services, including Expedia.com-explaining their advantages and limitations, and offering “Inside-the-system” tips for getting the best service and prices. With ONLINE TRAVEL, anyone can plan and book their next excursion like a pro!

Online Travel (Eu-Independent) Specifications

If you buy tickets and other travel services on the Internet, you typically spend more per purchase on travel than on anything else that you buy online. That’s just one reason to keep familiar with the travel sites. Ed Perkins, a syndicated travel columnist and Microsoft Expedia staff writer, shares his knowledge of online travel resources in Online Travel. You get the inside scoop on Expedia, as you’d expect, but you also find out the best independent sites for hotel bookings, temporary home swaps, and cruise arrangements. The book describes sound bidding strategies for auction sites, and explains how reverse-auctions like Priceline.com work (more specifically, how you can end up paying more than you have to). If there are any shortcomings, they’d be a lack of references to sites where you can do cultural and historical research into your destinations; also, the book overfocuses a bit on North American travel.

A lot of the value in this book–and there’s plenty of it–comes from information that has nothing at all to do with the Internet: for example, the differences in the ways that various airlines operate premium economy-class sections. Eva Air is touted as the best premium-economy deal in the world, and easy ways to get hotel discounts are revealed. That’s the kind of information that only an experienced writer could share, and a perusal of this book is likely to make your next travel experience less costly and more comfortable. –David Wall

Topics covered: A travel columnist with knowledge of how to get bargains reveals the resources that he uses on the Internet, including Expedia, Priceline.com, and other big and not-so-big travel sites. You’ll find details on where discount travel services come from, and how you can save money by knowing where to look.

Maui Car Rental – Your 6 Most Frequently Asked Questions Answered

It’s a dream for many to travel to Maui for a vacation so the last thing you want is to worry about transport. In Maui, car rentals are a great way to get around, so here are six of the most frequently asked questions answered if you decide to find a car.

1) Are there cheap AND reliable car rentals available in Maui?

Yes there are. However, expect that they are more expensive than the bigger islands. The best option is to rent for a few days, preferably a week. The longer the duration of rental, the better the price/package that can be negotiated. Find reasonable deals in Maui at Priceline or Costco if you are a member. For convenience there are lots to choose from at Kahului Airport including Hertz, Budget Rent a Car and Avis.

2) Is it true that the availability of cars in Maui is limited at different times of the year?

Yes that is true, especially in the peak holiday seasons (Maui peak season runs from mid-December to March and the summer holidays). If you have special needs or interests (e.g. if you are with your family and have lots of luggage or if you want an “air-in-your-hair” experience with a convertible), it’s important to book in advance. Many travelers have had their Maui experience tainted because they have not been able to get the car of their choice. Try April or May when it’s the shoulder season for cheaper prices.

3) Can I rent a car in Maui and drop it off at another location?

Maui, being a smaller island, has one drop off point for car rental. This is at the airport. However beware car rentals at the Maui airport are charged concession fees and taxes. For better deals which are a bit further from the airport try Word of Mouth Rent-A-Car or Enterprise Rent a Car.

4) Can I wait until I get to Maui to book a better car rental deal?

This is certainly not advised. It is always better to book in advance to ensure you get the car that you want and also for the dates that you want them. You will find that the rates are also better the further in advance you rent the car. If you do your homework you might find Maui vacation packages which bundle together car rentals. Often this can include other Maui highlights like diving or snorkeling tours, dinner cruises or helicopter rides.

5) Do I have to get insurance from the car rental agency?

This depends on whether your current car insurance policy covers you for rental car coverage. A good tip is to check with your current car insurance before purchasing extra insurance. It could save you money. If you are not covered, it is advisable to get rental car insurance. Your holiday may become a very expensive trip if an accident occurs or if there is any damage to the rental car.

6) I have read that Maui car rentals are more expensive than in the bigger islands – is that true? If so, should I take public transport?

Public transport in Maui is limited to buses, which can limit where you are able to visit. Taxis are also an expensive option, so renting a car is the best way to go. By renting a car, you have the flexibility of going where you want, when you want and stay for as long as you want. For example Haleakala National Park on the Hana Highway is a must see!

Choose Italy Car Rentals Wisely

The next 300 words on Italy car rentals can probably be succinctly summarized in six words or less, as follows: Do not take anything for granted. Your decision for a European car hire when planning your dream vacation in Italy is a perfect way to see Italy. Your itinerary is your own and ultimately flexible. None of this hopping in and out of tour buses, looking as touristy as you possibly can, and watching Vita La Italiana from behind the sun screened windows of your speeding tour coach.

No, not you! You will freely choose your own style from the 1000s of car hires available – selecting as much flair or as much budget can as you desire. Italy car rentals is a highly competitive aspect of the tourist sector, European style of course. Your choice at this stage can be of more importance than you may think at first. After all you do not want to strain your travel and shopping budget just to afford a car hire you really cannot afford. Likewise you do not want to spend your vacation cramped up in a tiny white nondescript mini 4 cylinder car with no radio and air conditioning just to save $100 for an otherwise quite fat budget!!

Be sure to check on local driving customs and learn about the taxes charged on vehicles entering Milan. A good GPS is invaluable as you traverse the rolling hills, grape vineyards and back roads of Tuscany. In Rome you will be better off parking your car and taking local bus transit as drivers in Italy are known to be rather free thinking. Stop signs and stop lights may be a mere suggestion, so keep that in mind. The train system in Italy is quite good and will work for going to the main tourist attractions, but if you want to see the real Italy a car hire is absolutely necessary.

Italy requires that you have an International Drivers Permit when driving anywhere in Italy. These can be obtained from many automobile clubs in your home country. Be sure to have your regular driver’s license with you as well because an IDP is not legal in Italy without your official driver’s license.

Actually, your more critical choices begin well before you choice of automobile. What vendor will you choose for Italy car rentals? Do they have a a good tourist support capability or is it bare bones the minute you pull out of their parking lot? How many offices do they have and which one makes the most sense for you? Do they speak only Italian or your native tongue, and will you have an agency contact/alternate who does speak your language and can help, at all times, should you need assistance with respect to your vehicle. Does the car hire package include road service and insurance? What are the limits of service and coverage? Is that sufficient? Do they take your credit card? Is anything not included? What if you are involved in an auto accident? What if the police get involved? Does your agency help? Remember, Italian authorities may not speak your language! Bon voyage my friend, and remember the ‘devil is in the details’!
